Friday night, the Dallas Christian Chargers did battle with the Fort Worth Christian Cardinals . The week's rain had the field in less than desirable condition. Both teams had been washed the previous week. Who would prevail?
The Chargers kicked off. Stephen Campbell's kick was taken at the goal line. The return was upended at the 11 by a Ty Parsons tackle. The Charger defense put a quick end to the Cardinal's first possession by forcing an incompletion and a big tackle for a loss by Andrew Gilmore. The Cardinals opted to quick kick. The Chargers took over at the 13. Two runs by Brandon Durham had the Chargers on the board first. Campbell tacked on the extra point making it 7-0 with less than two minutes expired in the first. After a Campbell touchback on the ensuing kickoff, the Cardinals took over at the 20. Two stuffs and an incompletion forced another Cardinal punt. This Charger drive started at the Cardinal 45. A 16 yard completion from Ryan Downs to Kasey Carter and another 11 yard pick up by Durham had the Chargers on the Cardinal 18 yard line. That is where the drive was halted by a fumbled reverse. The Cardinals started at their own 26 and moved the ball to the Charger 42 on 4 plays. On the 5th play of this drive, Chris Adcock broke through forcing a fumble that Parsons recovered. This Charger drive moved from their own 45 to the Cardinal 40 on runs by Durham and Campbell. Two incompletions later, they were forced to punt. The Cardinals took over on the 20 after a touchback. After a run of 26 yards moved the Cardinals out to the 46. Their drive stalled and another punt followed. The Chargers took over on their own 22. After a three yard loss on 1st down, Downs hooked up with Brad Smithey for a 27 yard gain. The quarter ended after a 4 yard pick up by Durham, with the score 7-0.
The Chargers marched all the way down to the Cardinal 16 on runs by Durham and Campbell. After a penalty, a 3 yard loss and a sack, the Chargers faced a 4th and 24. Downs hooked up with Matt Coleman for a 12 yard completion, but the ball went over on downs with 7:18 left in the 1st half. The Cardinals took over at their own 23. The Cardinals managed gains of 1, 10, and 16 moving the ball to the Charger 49. The Charger defense stiffened and forced a punt. The Chargers began this drive at their own 16. Downs picked up 19 on the first play on a keeper. The drive stalled after a stuff, penalty, and an incompletion. Campbell's punt covered 39 yards with no return. The Cardinals didn't take long to even the score. Gains of 6 and 38 set up a 16 yard touchdown toss. The Chargers got the ball back with 55 seconds to work with. A couple of hook-ups between Downs and King moved the ball to midfield. A spearing penalty at the end of the second catch moved the ball to the Cardinal 35. A 9 yard completion to Carter moved the ball to the 26 with 12.8 seconds left. A completion to Coleman moved the ball to the 16 with 7 seconds left. The Chargers opted to give Campbell a shot for a go ahead field goal. The Cardinals broke through and blocked the kick as time expired on the first half. The score all knotted up at 7.
The Chargers opened the second half with King taking the kick and returning it 21 yards out to the 46. Three straight incompletions set up a Campbell punt. The Cardinals took the 34 yard kick and returned it 80 yards to the end zone only to have it called back. They kept possession at their own 39. Two consecutive tackles for a loss by Parsons and an incompletion forced a Cardinal punt. King returned the punt 9 yards out to the 34. With 9:33 left in the 3rd, each team had traded three and outs. This drive also went three and out for the Chargers. This Campbell punt traveled 32 yards with no return. After the Cardinals picked up 1 on their first play, they decided to try a sweep to the right. Carter stuck the Cardinal ball carrier and dislodged the ball. Graham Breeden fell on it at the Cardinal 37 yard line. Downs picked up 7 followed by 3 more by Durham. Then Durham took the toss and scored only to have it nullified by a penalty that moved the Chargers back to the 36. Facing a 4th and 12 from the 27, Downs hooked up with Smithey for a touchdown. Campbell's kick made it 14-7 with 3:44 left in the third. The Cardinals returned the next kick out to their own 34. The Cardninals marched from their own 34 to the Charger 25 in 9 plays to end the 3rd quarter with the Chargers holding on to a 14-7 lead.
The Cardinals opened the 4th facing a 3rd and 6. Parsons stuffed the 3rd down run. The Cardinal pass attempt on 4th down fell incomplete. Starting at their own 25, the Chargers picked up 9 and 1/2 hards on three plays with a run by Downs and two by Durham. Opting to go for it on 4th down, Downs kept it for a 1st. On the next play, the Chargers put the ball on the ground. The Cardinals scooped it up and rambled 35 yards to tie the score with 9:07 left. The Chargers took the ball at their own 34. Two runs by Campbell moved the ball out to the 45. After a loss of 1 and two incompletions, Campbell launched another punt. This one covered 42 yards with no return. The Cardinals took over with 6:49 left. The Cardinals moved the ball from the 14 out to the 39 yard in 6 plays. Facing a 4th and 2 with 3:46 left, the Cardinals opted to punt. A shanked kick put the Chargers in business at their own 46. A run of 3 and a 10 yard completion to Carter moved the ball to the Cardinal 43 with 2:47 left. Facing 2nd and 12, King took a short Downs pass and turned it into a 35 yard gain to the 10 with 1:51 left on the clock. The tension could be cut with a knife. A couple of runs by Durham set the Chargers up at the 8 with 24.7 left. With no timeouts left, Downs took a shot at the endzone, only to have it fall incomplete. With 17.8 seconds left, Campbell kicked it through giving the Chargers the margin they needed for victory. The Cardinals could only manage a couple of futile attempts as time expired.
The Chargers found a way when it mattered. This was another epic battle in the Charger-Cardinal rivalry.
