The Chargers travelled to Cedar Hill last Friday night to take on the Trinity Christian Tigers. It was a rematch of last years state title game. Last year's version was all offense. This year's game was all about defense. When all the smoke cleared, the Chargers came out on top.
The Chargers took possession first. They took possession at their own 35. They quickly moved the ball out to the 49 on two Durham carries. The drive stalled and a punt ensued. The Tigers first drive began at their own 35 and netted negative 11 yards in 3 plays. They punted the ball back to the Chargers. The Chargers began their 2nd drive at the Tiger 47. They managed only a yard and punted the ball back to the Tigers. The Tigers began their 2nd drive at their own 20. Facing 3rd and long, a personal foul by the Chargers kept the drive alive. Three plays later, the Chargers forced a punt. A muff on the catch, allowed the Tigers to keep possession. They got the ball down to the 15 before settling for a 32 yard field goal as the quarter ended.
The Chargers received the kick off to start the 2nd quarter. They managed negative four yards in 3 plays and punted the ball away. The Tigers moved the ball from their own 47 to the Charger 25 before punting it back to the Chargers. The Chargers took possession at their own 20. Facing 3rd and 12, Downs hooked up with Brad Smithey for a 50 yard gain. three plays later, the Chargers punted. The Tigers started at their own 9 and moved the ball out to the 28 before punting it back to the Chargers. The Chargers took possessio at their own 30. They managed to move the ball out to the 49 before opting to punt. The Tigers began at their own 18. Facing 4th and 14 they opted to punt. Stephen Campbell busted through and blocked it. Graham Breeden picked it up and returned it to the 1 with five seconds left in the half. Ryan Downs opted to hand the ball off to Brandon Durham for a 1 yard plunge. Campbell tacked on the point after giving the Chargers a 7-6 advantage at the half.
The Chargers kicked off to start the 2nd half. The Tigers moved the ball from the 10 out to the 19 before opting to punt. Brad Smithey returned the ball 22 yards to the Tiger 28. The Chargers only managed 5 yards before attempting a field goal. Campbell's kick sailed wide left. The Tigers next drive netted negative one yard before opting to punt. The ball hit a Charger and the Tigers pounced on it at the Charger 43. They advanced it down to the Charger 4 . The Charger defense stiffened and forced a Tiger field goal cutting the margin to 7-6. The Chargers took possession at their own 41 after a decent return by Cameron Curry. The Chargers were facing a 4th and 2 as the quarter came to an end.
Brandon Durham picked up the first to start the fourth . The Chargers moved the ball on down to the Tiger 24 before the Tigers picked a Smithey pass attempt. They returned it out to the 30. Three plays later they punted. The Chargers went backwards on their next drive. A 17 yard punt gave the Tigers possession at the Charger 35 with 2 minutes remaining. They moved the ball down to the 2. It appeared as though they were about to take the lead as they lined up for a chip shot field goal. they mishandled the snap. Nick Lafuente scooped the ball and rambled 86 yards for the score. the point after failed leaving the score 13-6. The Tigers managed to move the ball on their last drive from their own 30 down to the Charger 26. They gave it one last heave toward the end zone but the ball was knocked down giving the Chargers the win.
The Chargers battled through offensive struggles, questionable calls, and special team miscues. Thanks to two huge special teams plays and a gutsy defensive performance, the Chargers open 1-0 in district play. Next up, Prestonwood.
